After a victory Friday night at Oilers Ice Center, the Tulsa Jr. Oilers lost the last two games to the Texas Brahmas Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday night the Oilers were going toe to toe with the Brahmas. Jon Toth scored for Tulsa in the first period to cut the Texas lead to 2-1. That would be as close in the game the Jr. Oilers would come to pushing them to the brink.
Matt Winkle added a 3rd period tally and Bobby Watson assisted on both Oilers goals with team captain Trevor Ruiz contributing with one of his own. Goalie, Tyrus Vanmatre made 46 saves in the losing effort. Texas Jr. Brahmas won 5-2 as Will Barber had 2 goals in 3 assists for the visitors.
Sunday mornings game the Jr. Oilers showed determination and a no quit approach in the 4-3 loss. The Brahmas got out to a 4-0 lead mid way thru the second period, but that was when the Oilers turned the tide. In the closing minutes of the period Bobby Watson got Tulsa on the board with helpers from Sam Hiserodt and Trevor Ruiz as the momentum shift started to take form.
With both teams physical play ramped up the Jr. Oilers fought back for two more goals in the third period. One by Matt Winkle and the other by Ben Reaman on a nice re direct pass. Bobby Watson had assists on both third period goals. The Jr. Oilers comeback was inspiring to the hometown crowd and applauded by head coach Zac Desjardins.
“I’m very happy with the effort and the pressure we kept on the Brahmas,” commented the head coach. “We have been working hard in practice and off ice preparing and to see the team come back down 4-0 is something great to build off of for the next 3 game series.”
Jr. Oilers goaltender Jordan Cartney made 23 saves on 24 shots as the team concluded the home games.
The Jr. Oilers will be on the road this weekend as they travel to Wichita to face another new team in the Western States Hockey League, the Jr. Thunder. Game times are listed below and can be heard live on fasthockey.com or followed on pointstreak.com.
